How to use this calculator
- 1Choose which marla you mean: 225 sq ft for DHA, LDA, Bahria Town and most housing schemes, or 272.25 sq ft for revenue (land-record) measure.
- 2Choose the unit you have — marla, kanal, square feet, square yards (gaj), square metres or acres.
- 3Type the area. The results show it in every other unit, and in marla and kanal of the other size too.
The formula
- 011 marla = 225 sq ft (housing schemes) or 272.25 sq ft (revenue records)
- 021 kanal = 20 marla = 4,500 sq ft or 5,445 sq ft
- 031 square yard (gaj) = 9 sq ft · 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m² (exact)
- 041 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 160 revenue marla = 8 revenue kanal
- 05Square feet = marla × marla size · marla = square feet ÷ marla size
The marla was standardised under British revenue law as 272¼ sq ft — a square rod, 1/160 of an acre — and that is still the size in land (revenue) records. Housing schemes adopted a round 25 square yards (225 sq ft): DHA Lahore's bye-laws define a marla as 225 sq ft and a kanal as 4,500 sq ft.
The difference matters: 10 marla is 2,250 sq ft in a housing scheme but 2,722.5 sq ft in revenue measure — 21 % more land. Always check which marla a seller or document means.
A kanal is always 20 marla, whichever marla is used. The square foot and acre are exact legal definitions, so the conversions to m² and acres are exact; results are only rounded for display.
Worked example
5 marla of 225 sq ft is 1,125 ft² — 125 yd² or 104.5 m².
In revenue measure the same land is 4.13 marla (272¼ ft²), because a revenue marla is 272.25 sq ft.
Tips before you buy
- Ask which marla an advert means — the same "10 marla" can be 2,250 or 2,722.5 sq ft.
- For a plot that is not a rectangle, use the square footage calculator to add up its parts, then convert the total here.
- Building bye-laws count the covered area from the plot size in their own marla; use the construction cost calculator to go from plot to covered area.
- Round in your favour when you buy: measure the plot on site as well as reading the papers.
