How to add or remove GST
- 1Choose whether to add GST to a price or remove it from a GST-inclusive total.
- 2Enter the GST rate — 18% for Pakistan's standard sales tax.
- 3Enter the amount: the price before tax (to add GST) or the total with tax (to remove it).
- 4Read the GST amount, the price before tax and the price including tax.
GST formula (add and reverse)
- 01r = GST rate ÷ 100
- 02Add GST: tax = net × r · total = net × (1 + r)
- 03Remove GST: net = total ÷ (1 + r) · tax = total − net
- 04The tax hidden in a total is total × r ÷ (1 + r) — at 18%, that is total × 18 ÷ 118
GST (General Sales Tax) is a tax added to the price of most goods in Pakistan. The standard rate has been 18% since 2023. To add it, multiply the price before tax by the rate — 18% of 1,000 is 180 — and add it on, giving a total of 1,180.
Going the other way is the part people get wrong. If a price already includes 18% GST, you cannot just take 18% off the total to find the original price. The total is 118% of the net price, so you divide by 1.18: a 1,180 total was 1,000 before tax, and 180 of it is GST. The tax inside a GST-inclusive total is total × 18 ÷ 118.
The same method works for any rate — change the 18% for a reduced rate, a provincial services tax, or VAT in another country.
GST calculation example
Adding 18% GST to a 1,000 price gives 180 of GST.
So the price including GST is 1,180.
Good to know
- To find the tax inside a price that already includes 18% GST, multiply the total by 18 and divide by 118 — not by 0.18.
- A shop price shown as "GST inclusive" already has the tax in it; use "Remove GST" to see the amount before tax.
- Change the rate for a different tax — for example a provincial sales tax on services, or another country's VAT.
- For a tax invoice, the net price plus the GST amount should equal the total shown to the customer.
GST calculator — common questions
What is the GST rate in Pakistan?
The standard General Sales Tax rate is 18%, in force since 2023 under the Sales Tax Act 1990 and collected by the FBR. Some goods have reduced rates, and provinces charge their own sales tax on services (around 13–16%).
How do I add 18% GST to a price?
Multiply the price before tax by 0.18 to get the GST, then add it on. For a 1,000 price: GST is 180, and the total including GST is 1,180.
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Divide the GST-inclusive total by 1.18 to get the price before tax; the difference is the GST. A 1,180 total becomes 1,000 before tax, with 180 of GST. Taking 18% off the total instead gives the wrong answer.
How much GST is in a 1,180 rupee price?
If the 1,180 already includes 18% GST, the tax is 1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = 180, and the price before tax is 1,000.
Can I use this for other tax rates?
Yes. Change the rate box to any percentage — a reduced GST rate, a provincial services tax, or VAT in another country — and the add and remove calculations still work.
