How the Islamic calendar works

  1. 01A Hijri year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days — about 354 or 355 days
  2. 02So Islamic dates move about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year
  3. 03Year 1 AH began in 622 CE, the year of the Hijra (migration) to Madinah
  4. 04Umm al-Qura: month lengths set in advance from astronomical calculation (Saudi Arabia)

The Islamic calendar is lunar: each month begins with the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a year is about 11 days shorter than the 365-day Gregorian year. That's why Ramadan and the Eids come about 11 days earlier every year and move through all the seasons over roughly 33 years.

There are two common ways to fix the months in advance. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar decides month lengths from astronomical calculations and is used for official dates there; the tabular (arithmetic) calendar uses a fixed 30-year pattern of long and short months. Both are built into modern browsers, and this converter uses them to match dates exactly.

Many countries — including Pakistan, India and Bangladesh — still begin each month when the new moon is actually sighted, so their dates can be one or two days later than Umm al-Qura. For religious occasions, always follow the announcement of your local moon-sighting committee.

Good to know

  • For fasting and Eid, follow your country's moon-sighting announcement — it can differ from Umm al-Qura by a day or two.
  • Islamic dates move about 11 days earlier each year, so use the upcoming-dates list to plan leave and travel.
  • A Hijri day starts at sunset, so the evening before a date on this page is already that Islamic day.
  • To know someone's Hijri birthday, convert their Gregorian date of birth.

Hijri date converter — common questions

What is today's Hijri date?

The converter shows today's date in the Hijri calendar as soon as it opens, using the Umm al-Qura calendar. In countries that follow local moon sighting it may be a day earlier.

How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?

Choose Gregorian → Hijri, pick the date and read the Hijri day, month and year. The converter uses the same Islamic calendar data as modern phones and browsers.

Why do Islamic dates differ between countries?

Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar is calculated in advance, while countries such as Pakistan, India and Bangladesh start each month when the new moon is sighted locally. That can make dates one or two days apart.

When is Ramadan this year?

The list of upcoming Islamic dates shows when Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are expected under Umm al-Qura. The exact start depends on the moon sighting in your country.

How many days are in a Hijri year?

About 354 or 355 days: twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days each, roughly 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year.
