How do I convert a PDF to JPG?

  1. 1Choose your PDF, or drag it onto the box. If it has a password, type it to open the file.
  2. 2Pick all pages, or type the pages you want, such as 1-3, 5.
  3. 3Choose the quality: 72 DPI for screens, 150 DPI for most uses or 300 DPI for printing, and JPG or PNG.
  4. 4Press Convert. Tap a page to save that image, or download all of them as a ZIP.

What DPI should I use for PDF to JPG?

  1. 01Image width (px) = page width (pt) ÷ 72 × DPI
  2. 02Image height (px) = page height (pt) ÷ 72 × DPI
  3. 03A4 page (595 × 842 pt) at 150 DPI = 1240 × 1754 px; at 300 DPI = 2480 × 3508 px
  4. 04Doubling the DPI makes 4 times as many pixels

A PDF measures pages in points: 72 points make one inch. To turn a page into an image, it is drawn at a number of dots (pixels) per inch, the DPI. So an A4 page, 8.27 inches wide, becomes 1240 pixels wide at 150 DPI and 2480 pixels at 300 DPI.

Higher DPI gives sharper images, but the number of pixels grows with the square of the DPI, so files get much bigger. 72 DPI suits screens and quick previews, 150 DPI is sharp on phones and laptops, and 300 DPI is the usual choice for printing. Browsers can't draw an image above about 16 million pixels, so a very large page is made a little smaller.

JPG compresses the picture and loses a little detail; a quality of 85–90 % looks the same as the page for most documents. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which suits text and line drawings but gives bigger files. Either way the image is a picture of the page: its text can no longer be selected or searched.

The pages are drawn by Mozilla's open-source pdf.js, the same engine Firefox uses to show PDFs, running entirely on your device. Scripts inside the PDF are never run.

Good to know

  • For WhatsApp, email or a website, 150 DPI JPG is plenty; save 300 DPI for printing.
  • A form needs a small file? Convert at 100–150 DPI, then shrink the JPG with the image compressor.
  • Choose PNG for pages with fine lines, charts or small text you want perfectly crisp.
  • Only need one page? Type its number under Choose pages instead of converting the whole file.

PDF to JPG — common questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened and drawn in your browser on your own device, and the images are made there too. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Which DPI should I choose?

72 DPI for quick previews on screen, 150 DPI for sharing and most online forms, and 300 DPI for printing. Higher DPI means sharper but much bigger images.

JPG or PNG — which is better?

JPG makes smaller files and suits scans and photos. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so text and line drawings stay perfectly crisp, but the files are bigger.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Yes. If the PDF needs a password to open, you are asked for it. It is used only on your device to open the file and is never saved or sent.

Can I convert only some pages?

Yes. Choose pages and type them like 1-3, 5 or 8- (page 8 to the end). Each page becomes its own image.

Can I copy the text from the images?

No. Each image is a picture of the page, so the text can't be selected or searched. Keep the original PDF if you need the text.
