Ideal weight formula (Devine) and healthy range
- 01Devine: men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft · women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft
- 02Healthy range = 18.5 to 24.9 × height (m)²
There is no single "perfect" weight, but formulas give a useful target. The Devine formula, widely used in medicine, starts from a base weight at five feet tall — 50 kg for men, 45.5 kg for women — and adds 2.3 kg for every inch above that.
A healthier way to think about it is a range, not one number. The healthy weight range shown is the set of weights that put your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height, which is what the WHO considers healthy.
Both are guides. Build, muscle and frame size all matter, so treat these as a target to aim near rather than an exact goal, and ask a doctor for advice tailored to you.
Ideal weight example
At 1.75 m, the Devine ideal weight is about 70.5 kg.
A healthy range for that height is 56.7 kg to 76.3 kg.
Good to know
- Aim for the range, not one exact number — build and muscle change what's healthy for you.
- A slow, steady change (about half a kilo a week) is easier to keep than a crash diet.
- Pair weight goals with activity and good sleep, not just eating less.
Ideal weight calculator — common questions
What is my ideal weight?
It depends on your height and sex. The Devine formula gives a target, and the healthy range (BMI 18.5–24.9) gives a band to aim within. Enter your height to see both.
Is there one perfect weight?
No. A healthy range is more realistic than a single number, because muscle, frame and build all vary between people of the same height.
Does age change ideal weight?
The Devine formula uses height and sex only. Age affects muscle and metabolism, but a healthy weight range for a given height stays broadly the same.
