How to convert currency
- 1Enter the amount you want to convert.
- 2Choose the currency you have (From) and the one you want (To), or tap a popular pair.
- 3Read the converted amount, the rate both ways and the amount in other major currencies.
- 4Optional: enter the rate your bank or money changer offers to compare it with the mid-market rate.
How currency conversion works
- 01Converted amount = amount × rate (1 From = rate To)
- 02Rate From → To = (USD → To) ÷ (USD → From)
- 03The reverse rate is 1 ÷ rate
Exchange rates say how much of one currency you get for one unit of another. To convert, multiply the amount by the rate: 100 US dollars at 1 USD = 0.92 EUR is 92 euros. Every rate here is worked out from each currency's rate against the US dollar, so any pair can be converted.
The rates shown are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buying and selling prices that banks trade at, as published by central banks and official sources. Banks, card companies and money changers usually give you a little less and may add a fee, so the amount you actually receive can be a few percent lower. Enter their quoted rate in the optional box to see the exact figure.
Good to know
- Compare the rate you're offered with the mid-market rate here — the gap is the hidden fee.
- For sending money abroad, check the total received after fees, not only the rate.
- Airport and hotel exchange counters usually give the worst rates; cards without foreign fees are often better.
- Rates move every day, so check again on the day you exchange.
Currency converter — common questions
How accurate are these exchange rates?
They are mid-market rates from central banks and official sources, updated daily. Banks and money changers add a margin, so the rate you get will usually be slightly worse.
What is the mid-market rate?
The midpoint between the buy and sell prices of a currency — the fairest benchmark rate, without any fee or margin added.
Why does my bank give a different rate?
Banks and exchange services add a margin to the mid-market rate (and sometimes a fee). Enter their rate in the optional box to see exactly what you'll receive.
Which currencies are supported?
More than 160, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PKR, AED, SAR, CNY, JPY, CAD, AUD, BDT, NGN, TRY and most others.
Does it work offline?
The last rates you loaded are kept for 12 hours in your browser. Offline without saved rates, you can still convert by typing a rate yourself.
