How do I convert a file to Word or PDF?

  1. 1Choose your file, or drag it onto the box. The tool tells you what kind of file it is.
  2. 2Pick what to make: Word (.docx) or PDF. For a PDF, choose Editable text or Exact look.
  3. 3Set the paper size, margins and quality if you like — or keep them as in the file.
  4. 4Press Convert and download your new Word file or PDF.

How does the document converter work?

  1. 01File → its text, headings, lists, tables, pictures and page setup → Word (.docx) or PDF
  2. 02Word → PDF: pages laid out like Word, saved as page pictures with invisible text
  3. 03PDF → Word: lines and columns rebuilt into paragraphs and tables (Editable) or placed exactly (Exact look)
  4. 04CSV and Excel: one table per sheet, header row repeated on every page; wide sheets on landscape pages

Every format is first read into the same simple document: paragraphs with their bold, italic, colours and sizes, headings, lists, tables with shading and merged cells, pictures, and the page size and margins. Readers for RTF, OpenDocument (.odt, .ods), Excel (.xlsx), CSV, Markdown, web pages and plain text do this on your device, and the result is written out as a real Word file or laid out into PDF pages.

A Word file to PDF keeps Word's own layout (headers, footers, page numbers and fonts) — see Word to PDF for the details. A PDF to Word works the other way: the text on each page is grouped into lines, paragraphs, columns and tables. Editable text gives a normal document you can change; Exact look places every line where it was, for forms and designed pages.

Spreadsheets become tables: each sheet is its own table with its name as a heading, numbers right-aligned, and the first row repeated at the top of every page. Wide sheets go on landscape pages with smaller text. Pictures (JPG, PNG, WebP and others your browser can open) become a page fitted inside the margins, at full quality.

Old binary formats — .doc, .xls and PowerPoint — can't be read here; the tool tells you how to save them in a newer format. Formulas in spreadsheets keep their last calculated value, and charts, SmartArt and equations are left out.

Good to know

  • Got a scanned PDF? Use PDF to Word with text recognition (OCR) — a scan has no text to convert otherwise.
  • Converting a wide Excel sheet to PDF? Keep paper size “As in the file”: wide sheets go on landscape pages automatically.
  • An old .doc, .xls or .ppt file? Open it in its program (or Google Docs / Sheets) and save it as .docx or .xlsx first.
  • Need a smaller PDF for an upload form? Run it through Compress PDF afterwards.

Document converter — common questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. Every file is read and converted in your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to a server; only free fonts may be downloaded when a Word document uses Calibri, Arial and similar.

Which formats can I convert?

PDF to Word; Word (.docx) to PDF; and ODT, RTF, TXT, Markdown, HTML web pages, CSV, Excel (.xlsx), OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods) and pictures to either Word or PDF.

Can I convert .doc, .xls or PowerPoint files?

Not directly — they are old binary formats. Open them in Word, Excel or PowerPoint (or Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or LibreOffice) and save as .docx, .xlsx or PDF.

Can I edit the Word file I get from a PDF?

Yes. With Editable text the PDF's text becomes normal paragraphs, headings, lists and tables you can change. Exact look keeps the layout exactly but is harder to edit.

How do I convert Excel to PDF?

Choose the .xlsx file and PDF. Each sheet becomes a table with its header row repeated on every page; wide sheets are put on landscape pages with smaller text.

Does it keep pictures and tables?

Yes. Pictures, tables (with shading and merged cells), lists, headings, bold, italic, colours and links are kept. Charts, SmartArt and equations are left out.
