How to work out a tip

  1. 1Enter the bill amount.
  2. 2Enter the tip percentage.
  3. 3Enter how many people are splitting it.
  4. 4Read the tip, the total and each person's share.

Tip formula

  1. 01Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100
  2. 02Total = bill + tip
  3. 03Each person = total ÷ number of people

A tip is a percentage of the bill. Multiply the bill by the tip rate (for example 0.10 for 10%) to get the tip, then add it to the bill for the total. Dividing the total by the number of people gives each person's share.

Tipping customs vary: in Pakistan a tip (often called "service" or baksheesh) is appreciated but not fixed; many leave around 5–10% for good service, and some restaurants already add a service charge — check the bill so you don't tip twice.

Tip calculation example

A 10% tip on a 2,000 bill is 200.

That makes the total 2,200.

Good to know

  • Check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip.
  • To tip 10% quickly, drop the last digit of the bill; for 5%, halve that.
  • Round the total to a convenient number to make paying easier.
