How to calculate your GPA

  1. 1Choose how many courses you took.
  2. 2For each course, enter its credit hours and the grade you got.
  3. 3Read your GPA, the total credit hours and total grade points.

GPA formula and grade points

  1. 01Each course: grade points = credit hours × grade value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 …)
  2. 02GPA = total grade points ÷ total credit hours
  3. 03A+ 4.0 · A 4.0 · A− 3.7 · B+ 3.3 · B 3.0 · B− 2.7 · C+ 2.3 · C 2.0 · C− 1.7 · D+ 1.3 · D 1.0 · F 0

GPA (Grade Point Average) turns your letter grades into a single number out of 4.0. Each grade has a point value — A is 4.0, B is 3.0, and so on — and each course is weighted by its credit hours, so a 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit one.

To find it, multiply each course's grade value by its credit hours to get its grade points, add up all the grade points, and divide by the total credit hours. A course you fail (F, 0 points) still adds its credit hours to the total, which pulls the average down.

Grade scales differ between universities — some use A− at 3.66 or treat A+ above 4.0. This calculator uses the common 4.0 scale; check your university's scale if yours differs.

GPA calculation example

With these courses, your semester GPA is 4 over 15 credit hours.

Good to know

  • Credit hours matter — a high grade in a big course lifts your GPA more than in a small one.
  • A failed course still counts its credit hours, so it hurts the average twice.
  • Check your university's grade scale; some differ from the common 4.0 values.

GPA calculator — common questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 …) by its credit hours to get grade points, add them up, and divide by the total credit hours.

What is a good GPA?

On a 4.0 scale, above 3.5 is usually considered very good and above 3.0 solid, but it depends on your programme and university.

Does a failed course affect GPA?

Yes — an F counts 0 grade points but still adds its credit hours to the total, so it lowers your GPA noticeably.

Is the grade scale the same everywhere?

No. Most use a 4.0 scale but the exact points for A−, B+ and A+ can differ. This calculator uses the common values; check your university's.
