Hostels in Karachi for Students: Areas Near Each University (2026 Guide)

Karachi is huge, so the best hostel area is the one on your daily route to campus. Several big universities line University Road — the University of Karachi, NED and Sir Syed University — with IBA's main campus inside the KU enclave and Dow's Ojha campus further along, so the neighbourhoods around that road (Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulzar-e-Hijri) are where many students look. Under Sindh law, your landlord or hostel must report you to the police, and registration with Karachi Police is free. Never pay before you have seen the room.

Universities and where they are

Students also search a lot for hostels in Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Clifton, DHA and along Shahrah-e-Faisal — but check the trip at your class time before you choose.

Some universities have their own hostels: IBA has student residences inside the KU premises, and AKU houses more than 800 students on its Stadium Road campus. Apply for those through the university's own office.

Getting around

• Green Line BRT runs from Surjani Town to Numaish via Nagan Chowrangi and Nazimabad, carrying about 80,000 riders a day.
• Red Line BRT along University Road (Malir Halt to Numaish) is still under construction, with a June 2027 deadline — expect roadworks on University Road until then.
• Peoples Bus Service runs routes along University Road and Shahrah-e-Faisal, and there is a women-only Pink Bus. Routes have been renumbered over time, so check the current route before you rely on it.

Rules to know in Karachi

Under the Sindh Information of Temporary Residents Act 2015:

• A landlord, tenant or property dealer must tell the police within 48 hours of handing over a rented place.
• A hostel owner or manager must report each new resident within 3 hours of check-in, after checking their CNIC or passport.
• Breaking these rules can mean up to six months in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000 to Rs 45,000.
• Hostels run only for an institution's own enrolled students or staff are outside the Act's definition of a hostel.

Karachi Police say rented houses and hostel rooms must be registered, free of charge, and the registration certificate "helps avoid trouble during search operations". You can register on the Sindh Police tenant registration portal. Ask the hostel to show you that you have been registered.

Before you pay

• Visit at the time you would really travel, and once after dark.
• Check the water supply and storage, backup power during load-shedding, and the fire exits.
• In a girls' hostel, look for a female warden, a guard and an in/out register.
