Hostels in Islamabad for Students: Areas Near Each University (2026 Guide)

Where to look for a hostel in Islamabad and Rawalpindi: the sector of every main university, the Metro lines that reach them, tenant registration and safety rules.

By Riyan M.5 min read

The easiest way to choose a hostel in Islamabad is to start from your university's sector. Most big campuses sit in a row of H sectors — Shifa in H-8, NUML in H-9, IIUI in H-10, FAST, Bahria and Air University campuses in H-11, and NUST in H-12 — so a hostel in or next to that sector, or close to a Metro stop, saves you time and fares every day. Before you move in, remember that tenant registration with Islamabad Police is mandatory, and that hostel rules in the capital are still being worked out, so check the hostel yourself before paying.

How Islamabad's sectors work

Islamabad is laid out in a grid of sectors. The letters run from north to south (A to O) and the numbers from east to west, so G-9 sits directly above H-9, and H-9 sits beside H-8 and H-10. Each sector has a central market (Markaz); G-9 Markaz is better known as "Karachi Company". I-10 borders Rawalpindi to the south.

Getting around: the Metro lines

  • Red Line (Rawalpindi–Islamabad Metro): Saddar to Pak Secretariat, 24 stations, along Murree Road, IJP Road and Jinnah Avenue, from about 6:15 am to 10 pm. Stops include 6th Road, Shamsabad, Faizabad, Peshawar Morr and PIMS — useful for Rawalpindi campuses and for living in Rawalpindi.
  • Orange Line: from Peshawar Morr/Faiz Ahmed Faiz to the new airport, with stops at G-10, NUST, G-13 and Golra.
  • Blue Line: PIMS to Gulberg along the Islamabad Expressway, with stops at H-8 and I-8.
  • Green Line: PIMS to Bhara Kahu via Aabpara.
  • Feeder buses: FR-7 runs from PIMS to NUST, and the FR-4A shuttle runs from Bari Imam to Quaid-i-Azam University.

Rules to know in Islamabad

  • Tenant registration is mandatory for all tenants in the Islamabad Capital Territory, according to Islamabad Police. You can register online, at a Police Khidmat Markaz or at a police station; the police page lists a Rs 500 fee and one working day. Ask the hostel how it registers residents — hostels and guest houses also log guests in the police "Hotel Eye" system.
  • Hostel regulation is still unsettled. The Interior Ministry has told the National Assembly that registering and regulating hostels is not directly the ICT Police's job; in August 2026 the Women Parliamentary Caucus said hostel regulation "had not yet been properly established", and a Senate committee told the CDA to act against hostels in residential areas (the CDA said the matter was before the Islamabad High Court). In practice: ask whether the building is approved for use as a hostel, and don't pay months in advance.
  • Rent law: the Islamabad Rent Restriction Ordinance 2001 leaves hostels out of its definition of a residential building, so deposit disputes in a hostel may not go to the Rent Controller. Get the rent, deposit and refund terms in writing — our guide to security deposits and advance rent explains how.

Safety

  • Islamabad Police's "1 Information" app has a panic button; the ICT administration asked students to install it in 2026.
  • Police helpline 15; Islamabad Police also list 1715 and 1815, and an online women's police station.
  • In a girls' hostel, check for a female warden, a guard and an in/out register, and keep to the gate times.

Our hostel checklist before booking goes through the room, water, backup power and safety item by item, and renting safely covers the common scams. You can also read the checklist in Urdu.

Frequently asked questions

Which sector is NUST in?

NUST is in sector H-12 and has its own station on the Orange Line, which also stops at G-10 and G-13. The PIMS–NUST feeder bus (FR-7) links it to the Red and Blue Lines.

Do I need to register as a tenant in Islamabad if I live in a hostel?

Islamabad Police say tenant registration is mandatory for all tenants in the capital, and hostels log guests in the police "Hotel Eye" system. Ask the hostel how it registers residents, and keep a copy of your registration.

Where do students look for hostels in Islamabad?

Usually near their own campus: the H sectors for NUST, IIUI, FAST, NUML and Shifa, and Rawalpindi's 6th Road and Murree Road along the Red Line for Rawalpindi campuses. G-9, G-10, I-8 and F-8 are also searched a lot.

Is there a Metro to Quaid-i-Azam University?

There is no Metro station at the university itself, but the FR-4A shuttle runs from Bari Imam to Quaid-i-Azam University.
